Children are at the heart of everything we do and over the last year we have been building a new approach to help support the children of Surrey.

We are looking for Social Workers, Senior Social Workers and Advanced Social Workers to join our team of dedicated professionals across our Safeguarding teams in Surrey to help embed Surrey’s new family centred approach to tackling the causes of children being in need or at risk.

As a member of the Assessment team you will be working with children from pre-birth to 18, in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Each quadrant has a number of small assessment teams, made up of statutory social workers, a family support worker and a youth support practitioner. Our practice across the whole service is based upon consent, strong relationships with families and with partners who are also supporting our families.

The first contact any family or professional has with our assessment service sets the tone for our entire working relationship with them.

Our approach with families

Using motivational approaches the assessment social worker engages with both the family and the network supporting them to understand the presenting worries and work out whether a statutory social work service is required. If not, a plan to support the family at a lower level of need will be put in place to meet the need of the child and family.

It is important that from the first engagement with a new family the Assessment Service is thinking ahead to the next step for that child. Our teams create support around each child to either resolve family problems without statutory support or, when there is potential that the child will be harmed in their family, that they are thinking about the best next steps to arrive at permanency for that child.

The team is supported by strong management, regular supervision and a culture of learning and development, with opportunities to access a range of training activities.

Surrey County Council has a fantastic opportunity for qualified social workers to join one of our Assessment teams. We are looking for committed and passionate workers who are interested in the challenges of working in a busy, professional environment.

We believe that Surrey is one place in the country where professionals can make the biggest difference to children lives. We have taken huge strides towards delivering outstanding children services, and we want professionals who are passionate as we are to join us on this journey.

Your development

Both Social Worker and Senior Social Workers have a bespoke Learning programme developed by the Surrey Children’s Service Academy. You will have Continuous Professional Development and are supported to become Practice Educators with a clear Professional Development Pathway.

Advanced Social Workers, is an exciting newly developed role in Surrey Children Services. While holding a significantly lower case load of complex cases, you will be supporting the Team Manager to develop social workers who have less experience in the field. This is an opportunity for you to progress your career in social work while not entering into a management role.

The Council has also invested in training staff in the Family Safeguarding model, Motivational Interviewing, as well as investing in support to develop systems thinking in practice in Surrey. Your development will be supported by regular supervision and appraisal as well as a range of coaching, e-learning and other reflection and learning opportunities.

A message from Jacquie Burke, Director for Family Resilience and Safeguarding

“We want children to stay with their families as much as they possibly can. Our commitment to early support and prevention - using our Family Safeguarding model - leads to lower caseloads. This allows social workers to do higher quality work, build close relationships with families, and give children the vital support they need.”

Additional Information

We offer £35,382 - £39, 246 per annum for Social Workers and £40,227 - £44,619 per annum Senior Social Workers and Advance Social Worker; salary dependent on level of experience. You would be based at one of our 4 Office locations in Guildford (South West), Woking (North West) Redhill (South East) & Walton-on-Thames (North East).
