The starting salary for this role is £27,991 per annum for 36 hours per week based from one of our area offices in Guildford (Merrow) or Godstone.
Surrey is reputed to be the most densely wooded county in Southern England with some of the busiest roads outside of London. Surrey County Council is responsible for the management of risk from some 2 million trees and monitoring their condition adjacent to and on the highway, spending around £1.4 million per year on managing this risk.
The UK government has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and Surrey Council County has followed suit by declaring a Climate Emergency. As part of our overall response to this, the council has committed to facilitate the planting of 1.2 million trees – one for every Surrey resident – by 2030.
We are looking for a Highways Environmental Officer to join the Aboricultural Team within the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure Directorate. This is an important front facing role and will be the focal point for delivering and supporting a range of environmental activities reporting to the Arboricultural Team Manager. This post provides support to the Arboricultural Team Manager and duties will include but are not limited to:
- Facilitating tree planting on the public highway, working with both internal and external stakeholders to help deliver the council’s tree planting commitment
- Planning highway verge maintenance and 3rd Part Tree Notices
- Responding to enquiries and chasers from a wide range of stakeholders including residents and elected members, upholding excellent customer care standards
- Working with a range of contractors to help ensure value for money and a quality service for residents
- Working in the field, making highway visits, using mobile technology to access information.
You will be a highly self-motivated individual with a ‘can do’ approach, capable of making a valuable contribution towards environmental maintenance and improvement. As well as this, you will have good communication and writing skills as well as a well organised, logical approach to workloads. Good IT skills, including experience of using Excel, Word and emails, are also needed. You will have achieved a good standard of Secondary Education or be able to evidence an equivalent level of experience and/or relevant vocational qualification (level 3/4 QCF). Training in Environmental and Arboricultural issues will be provided.
Due to the nature of the role, a full driving licence is essential.
