The starting salary for this role is £21,943 per annum, rising to £30,510 subject to progress through the training programme, and is based on a 36 working hour week.

You will be working in our Highway Scheme Design Team that deals with the design and construction of Highway Improvement schemes across Surrey. Typical examples of schemes could be cycling facilities, signalised pedestrian crossings, traffic calming schemes and speed management schemes, all aimed at improving safety for all road users.

This is an excellent opportunity for a person wishing to pursue a career highway engineering and design.

You will be given training to enable you to carry out basic CAD (Computer Aided Design) work for highway improvement schemes and to assist in the design and delivery of highway improvements and traffic management schemes. You will gain a wide range of skills and will assist in undertaking surveys, analysis of data and preparing documentation for public consultations. You will also learn how to produce scheme feasibility studies, estimates, project programmes and progress reports.

There will be the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of all aspects of highway works and highway maintenance, including carriageway surfacing, drainage and structures.

You will be working towards a Level 3 Civil Engineering qualification, or similar and will attend college one day a week (term time only).

The role is a Professional Development Post spanning three linked grades within our pay grade structure.  This means that the role is intended to develop the successful candidate to become an engineering technician, with training and experience provided to ensure progress.

Candidates must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A to C including Maths and English.  In the selection process we will be looking for a commitment and enthusiasm to learn, with a desire to develop a career in an engineering environment.  In addition candidates should cover the following areas in their application:

  • Your experience with IT tools including databases and e-mails
  • Your competence in the use of MS Office (Word and Excel)
  • Your experience of working in an office environment as part of a team
  • Your written and verbal communication skills.

Your main base will be Merrow Depot and whilst you will not initially need to be a car driver, it could be useful if you were working towards your Driving Test, as eventually you may be required to travel to sites as required. 

Operations & Infrastructure Group operates an agile working system, in accordance with the County Council's policy.  This means that all Officers are expected to be available when needed, with flexibility to work from both council offices and their home (or other suitable arrangements).  It is expected all Officers will regularly work from their designated office to maintain team working and as required by their manager.  All Officers are expected to be make themselves available to attend site and other meetings when needed.
