The Highways Operations and Infrastructure group in the Highways and Transport Service provides excellent customer service, and this is embraced to ensure that customers are at the heart of everything we do.
We are looking for a Professional Development Programme position of a Traffic Engineer to work with the Senior Traffic Engineer on assisting and delivering a programme of traffic engineering projects. Ensuring that traffic enquiries are always dealt with appropriately, and new schemes are prioritised and delivered in a professional manner.
The position provides a formal career development opportunity supported by a comprehensive training and development offer. This position has a grade span ranging between PS7 - PS9 (£27,991 to £34,519).
The Highway Engagement and Commissioning Team are responsible for delivering approximately £3 million of traffic engineering schemes across Surrey each year, and respond to approximately 3,500 traffic engineering related enquiries every year.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside County Councillors and other stakeholders to better understand the traffic safety, highway environment and improvement needs of an area, which will also influence the work of a variety of engineering teams. This will include assisting the Senior Traffic Engineer to represent the Service at engagement meetings that elected representatives will be attending and helping with advising Members on prioritising the resources available to them.
The workload will be varied but will include a range of general traffic issues for new speed limits, traffic calming measures, junction improvements, managing traffic to improve air quality and improving routes to schools. This will often mean working closely and collaboratively with the Senior Traffic Engineer, other highway teams, partner organisation, elected Members, contractors and other stakeholders.
You will help to commission works from other teams within the group and service to enable best value from the budgets available. You will work alongside the Senior Traffic Engineer to actively engage with a variety of stakeholders. Within this role you will gain experience in attending a number of meetings alongside the Senior Traffic Engineer.
The work will require site visits, and so training of site safety procedures and temporary traffic management practices will be provided as part of this role.
We are looking for a highly motivated person who loves a challenge, who has a keen interest in problem solving, and who would like to make a valuable contribution towards influencing traffic engineering outcomes. Good organisational and IT skills will also be required.
