As part of an exciting transformation and modernisation programme for our children’s residential service we have a Portfolios Lead role available in Tadworth.

It is an exciting time to join our service. We have an investment plan that includes £34m to improve our children’s homes, so children and young people receive an exceptional level of care so they can thrive and reach their full potential. We are refurbishing our existing homes and building new ones. This is all part of our ambition and purpose to ensure that every child in Surrey is seen and heard and can grow.

Portfolio Leads will have a pivotal role in supporting the home’s deputy manager and children’s key work teams and will take the lead within the children's home in improving outcomes for children and young people. There will also be an expectation that you will work directly with children and young people through a mixture of individual and group interventions.

The role acts as the lead staff member developing and maintaining professional networks, resources, training and tools to promote positive outcomes for children and young people in a specific portfolio area. You will be at the front line of intervention with children, young people and their families and you will collaborate to develop plans that address identified needs in a way that engage:

  • The quality and purpose of care
  • The children and young people’s views, wishes and feelings
  • The children and young people’s education
  • Children and young people’s enjoyment and achievement
  • Children and young people’s health and well-being
  • Children and young people’s positive relationships
  • Children and young people’s safety and protection

You will be confident and have experience of working with partner organisations to plan this care and intervention. You must be confident to challenge where necessary to ensure outcomes are improved.  

You will direct the work of other staff in the children’s home and will contribute to ensuring services are compliant with children’s home regulations, including Ofsted frameworks. You will also contribute to the regular auditing and monitoring of children’s care and experiences, using evaluation tools and monitoring to ensure services are effective and that key outcomes are delivered. This will also involve analysis and reporting of information to the manager on your specific portfolio lead area.

At the heart of our service is effective relationships and restorative approaches with children, young people and families to support them with being safe, restoring and maintaining relationships, building on their talents and aspirations, and helping them engage with education, health and well-being resources. You will be someone that can build relationships with young people and their families, especially those who may be the hardest to reach, or whose needs are not well-served by current services. You will therefore be driven, inspirational and able to work autonomously as well as resilient and innovative. Flexibility is key in your approach to work, as hours worked are on a rota basis. You will need to be prepared to work evenings, weekends, bank holidays and sleep in duties. For this commitment we will reward you with an additional, generous unsocial hours payment. 

In return for your expertise, commitment and experience we will enable your ongoing learning and development through a culture of high support and high challenge, and access to a range of learning and development activities including Restorative Approaches, Motivational Interviewing and Positive Behaviour Support. We also support staff to obtain a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Care (if not already held).

To apply and be considered for as a Portfolio Lead your application will clearly evidence:

  • A Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, or equivalent
  • Your proven ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with children, adolescents, their families and professionals involved in their care, and knowledge of the issues that affect them, including trauma, attachment, and contextual safeguarding
  • Proven experience of interagency working
  • Demonstrable competence in effective assessment, risk management and strengths-based care planning
  • In-depth knowledge of delivering statutory childcare services including the residential care of children and knowledge of the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015 and Quality Standards
  • Commitment to the working pattern of the role, which includes weekends and unsocial hours
