Are you passionate about countryside management and looking for an opportunity to build on your career? Do you want to be part of a team which works towards making Surrey a greener place, protecting and enhancing our valuable natural assets?

If yes, then we want to hear from you!

The Countryside Estate Operations team within the Environment, Transport and Infrastructure directorate at Surrey County Council is seeking to appoint a Countryside Litter and Maintenance Assistant.

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic person to join our successful Countryside Estate Operations Team. The role involves travelling to our different countryside sites spread across Surrey and undertaking practical maintenance work, particularly in and around the rural car parks. Grass cutting, litter clearance, pot-hole filling, mending signs and talking to members of the public will all be in a day’s work.

The role will involve emptying bins, picking litter and the collection of dumped waste material. You will undertake practical maintenance tasks to maintain, protect and improve the council's countryside estate. The work will be varied and include a broad range of practical countryside, estate and landscape maintenance tasks. This will often involve working on your own, so you should be able to work reliably and conscientiously to complete tasks as instructed, to a high standard. This will involve some weekend and bank holiday working. In addition, you will ensure effective records are kept and relevant health and safety arrangements are complied with, in order that the County Council’s statutory obligations are met.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is able to show an understanding and experience of relevant practical skills, is reliable and is able to work unsupervised. You will be an enthusiastic self-starter!

To be shortlisted for interview for this role, your CV and personal statement will need to evidence the following:

  • Skills and experience to undertake practical countryside maintenance tasks
  • Ability to drive or otherwise visit inaccessible locations, sometimes at short notice
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and sometimes in difficult terrain
  • Able to work some weekends and evenings

About Us

The Environment, Transport and Infrastructure (ETI) directorate is responsible for a wide range of services including highways, transport, planning, countryside and waste management. These services are critical for people living, working and travelling through Surrey, delivered by the County Council or in partnership.

The Countryside Estate Operations Team is within the Natural Capital Group in the ETI directorate. We work alongside various teams including countryside access, legal, maintenance, improvement work on Public Rights of Way, Open Access land and countryside partnerships. We deal with countryside issues which can, at times, be controversial and generate great public interest, therefore requiring sensitive and balanced management when dealing with partners and members of the public.

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.

Additional Information

The job advert closes at 23:59 on 21.10.2022 with interviews to follow.
