Graduate Policy Officer (2-year fixed term contract)

£26,466 per annum

(37 hours per week) Hybrid working

About the role

This is a brand new and exciting role which will provide excellent exposure to local government decision making and policy creation – perfect for an ambitious and motivated individual looking to start or develop a career in local government policy.

The role will report directly to the Chief Executive (CEX) and will assist the CEX and his team to develop new policies and strategies and support the delivery of new initiatives (e.g. on climate change and flood mitigation in the borough). The post holder will develop their analytical and research skills and will be a key player in the introduction of new government initiatives.

• The role will involve working with partners, other local authorities, health authorities, elected members, residents and central government agencies – helping you to gain key skills in networking and partnership working.
• You will have the opportunity to lead or participate in key corporate projects and will work with senior managers across the organisation
• In additional to the main role reporting to the CEX, there will be multiple, short-term placements. In Electoral Services and Housing, plus others which will be tailored to your interests and career aspirations. We feel it is vital to provide our graduate with a broad overview of the diversity of local governmental services and aim to help you establish and further your career goals.
• There will also be an opportunity to gain a further qualification, subject to your interests and existing qualifications.

About you

We are looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic, and passionate individual who is looking to progress their career in local government.

To be successful in this position you will be a graduate, ideally with some experience in either public sector policy development or working corporately in the private sector. You should have experience of analysing data and writing reports, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and projects.

With a keen interest in public service and researching complex issues, you will be articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to liaise effectively with all stakeholders (including politicians).
